How can industrial symbiosis increase resource efficiency for companies, and what tools are available to support resource sharing? Project Lead Marco Estrela presented SCALER’s objectives at the 2018 Workshop on Industrial Symbiosis in Frankfurt, during the ACHEMA 2018 fair.

The event brought together industry representatives to discuss how industrial symbiosis can help increase resource efficiency, all the while limiting effort for research and cross-checking. This provided a space for Horizon2020 projects to present their research and strategies to scale up resource exchange across Europe.

SCALER joined the MAESTRI project to present its plans to mainstream industrial symbiosis within the EU process industry. This includes the production of guidelines for the implementation of industrial symbiosis, including information on best practices and incentives, and results from quantitative assessments. SCALER complements MAESTRI’s existing tools that aim to help industries better understand how they can profit from industrial symbiosis practices.

The workshop identified key opportunities and gaps, including the need for better knowledge of the waste streams and their potential uses in other industries and sectors. Pan-European databases of waste and by-products, as well as adapted legislation, were identified as key enablers for a wider implementation.
